How Many Listings Do You Need to Make $2,000 Per Month on eBay?

One of the most common questions new sellers ask is:

How many listings do I need to make real money on eBay?

If you’re curious about the overall income potential, I also wrote a breakdown of how much money you can realistically make selling on eBay.

The answer isn’t a fixed number. It depends on what you sell, how much your items are worth, and how consistently you list.

But there are some patterns that most long-time eBay sellers eventually notice.

Inventory Size Matters — But Quality Matters More

Many sellers hear advice like:

“Just list 1,000 items and the sales will come.”

But that only works if the items actually have a decent sell-through rate.

Listing 1,000 items that nobody wants won’t help.

What matters is listing items that people actually search for and buy.

That said, it is true that more inventory generally creates more opportunities for sales.

More options means more chances that something will sell.

Consistency Is Extremely Important

One thing I’ve noticed after selling for years is that consistency matters more than huge listing days.

Even with a decent sized store, I can sometimes notice a small dip in activity if I stop listing for several days.

It doesn’t have to be a lot.

Even listing:

  • 1 item per day
  • 2 items per day
  • 5 items per day

can slowly build your store over time.

When you’re comfortable and get faster at listing, you might be able to list 10 or more per day, but it’s perfectly fine to start small.

In a way, running an eBay store is like feeding a machine.

You have to keep adding inventory so the store continues growing.

Use Drafts to Stay Consistent

One trick that helps a lot is using draft listings.

Sometimes I’ll create 10 or 20 listings in drafts ahead of time.

Then if I’m busy or want to take a break from listing, I can simply go into drafts and click:

List → List → List

This keeps new items appearing in my store every day even if I’m not actively listing that moment.

It also helps show eBay that you’re an active seller, which can help your store stay visible.

The $2,000 Per Month Example

Let’s say your goal is to make around $2,000 per month in sales.

The number of items you need to sell depends heavily on the price of your items.

For example:

If your average item sells for $25, you might need to sell around:

80 items per month.

But if you’re selling higher-priced items like:

  • electronics
  • shoes
  • clothing
  • collectibles

then you might sell items for $100, $200, or even $300 each.

In that case, you might only need:

10–20 sales per month to reach $2,000 in revenue.

That’s why focusing on quality inventory can make a big difference.

Start With Achievable Goals

If $2,000 per month sounds overwhelming, start smaller.

Set goals like:

  • $100 per month
  • $200 per month
  • $500 per month

Those milestones often happen sooner than people expect if they stay consistent.

Over time, those numbers grow.

Many sellers eventually reach levels that once felt impossible.

When that happens, you often look back and realize how much progress came simply from listing consistently and improving over time.

Final Thoughts

Building an eBay store takes time.

There isn’t a magic number of listings that guarantees income.

But two things consistently help sellers grow:

  • Listing items people actually want
  • Staying consistent with new inventory

If you keep doing those two things, your store slowly builds momentum.

And eventually the numbers that once seemed out of reach start to feel normal.
